Down Syndrome Association of the LowCountry - Charleston, SC

Good morning DSAL members:

We had a sensational time at the DSAL Guest Speaker / Dinner event this past Saturday night.

After everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner, Embry Burrus told her story of how she came to write the book Mama and Margaret (more info here: http://www.dsalowcountry.org/11-10-An-evening-with-Embry-Burrus.html and Embry's website http://66.49.247.20/index.htm)

DSAL did purchase a few extra copies for those that would like to read this amazing story of unconditional love and acceptance.

Embry and her sister Margaret plan to return to Charleston in the spring to participate in the Special Olympics Bocce Bash! She's also agreed to present again to DSAL for those that were unable to attend Saturday night's event.

Special thanks to Josh at Sticky Fingers for the wonderful food and allowing DSAL to use the room without a fee.

Also thank you to Jennifer at Trio solutions for her assistance in planning the event.

Most special thanks to Debbie Antonelli for letting DSAL know about the opportunity for Embry to come to Charleston... It was very sad that Debbie had to work on the weekend of the event :(

Below is Embry's thank you -

Best regards,

Chad

Hello DSAL,

Just wanted to say thanks for a wonderful evening on Saturday! It was an honor and a privilege to meet all of you. I am truly grateful for the opportunity. I've already told Margaret about the Bocce tournament, and she's chomping at the bit! ;-)

Look forward to seeing all of you, hopefully next spring! Have a wonderful holiday season...

All the best,

Embry

About A. Embry Burrus, MCD, CC/SLP
Embry is the Author of Mama and Margaret, a heartwarming, honest and funny book about Embry's sister Margaret, who was born with Down syndrome, and her mother, Augusta. The story takes the reader through the tense moments after Margaret's birth, the challenges she faced as a child, and her awe-inspiring life as an adult, including a jam-packed social calendar, colorful friends and numerous accomplishments. The reader also gets to know Mama, in all her exquisite southernness, whose emotional, quirky and sometimes hilarious relationship with Margaret provides an underlying current throughout each chapter.

Embry is a licensed speech pathologist and spends her days doing clinical teaching with graduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders at Auburn. Embry has always enjoyed writing, whether letters to friends (and now e-mail), diaries, journals or simple notes to herself. She also enjoys storytelling and has been relating stories about her family for many years. Mama and Margaret is her first attempt at actually writing them down. She has been published in ByLine, Lake Martin Living and the Birmingham Arts Journal.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
