Down Syndrome Association of the LowCountry - Charleston, SC

Hi Everyone!

DSAL has partnered with Special Olympics Coordinator Susie Goss in effort to establish a Young Athlete Program in the Charleston area.  The Young Athlete Program is for children ages 3-7 years who wish to eventually compete in Special Olympics.  The purpose of this program is to give our children the opportunity to practice the skills necessary to compete in Special Olympics. It also serves to help parents to connect through the small groups that will be established.

We have permission to use the Jones Gym in Mt. Pleasant (part of Mt. Pleasant Rec. Dept.) for our initial meeting and training session.  Sue Maner, the Youth Program Coordinator, will be coming from Columbia to do the training.  The first session will be on Saturday, February 23, 2008 from 4-6 pm.  The Gym is on Egypt Rd. beside Belle Hall Elem. (off of Long Point Rd. from 526). And for those interested, there will be a
unified basketball game in the gym prior to our training session if anyone wants to go early and watch it.

We need everyone who can attend to come out and bring their young athlete (siblings are welcome too) for an introduction to the program. We will have the training kits and manuals on hand for everyone to look at.  If you cannot make it to the meeting February 23rd but you are interested in participating in the program, please email Melissa King at mking96@hometelecom.com with the following information:

Name of athlete(s) and parent(s)
Age of athlete Area you live in
Phone number or email

If you are planning on attending the meeting please contact me either by email or phone, 843-377-8531 and let me know how many people will be attending.

Thank you,

Melissa King

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
