Down Syndrome Association of the LowCountry - Charleston, SC

2007 Buddy Camp

Buddy camp was sensational. 10 kids with Down syndrome and 10 typically developing peers spent mornings Monday – Thursday last week doing fun activities and learning through play. Buddy Camp was held at Daniel Island Academy and Ready Set Jump.

Diane Andrews led the effort to enlist other therapists and MUSC students to volunteer their time.  The goal is to make Buddy Camp, which is funded by proceeds from the annual Lowcountry Buddy Walk for Down syndrome, an annual summer program and expand the ages served. We’ve got someone working on a press release.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
