The 2008 Lowcountry Buddy Walk

Down Syndrome Education Week

September 8-12, 2008

A Community Educational Project presented by the

Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry (DSAL)

The week of September 8-12 has been designated as Down Syndrome Education Week presented by the Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry (DSAL).  This is a week long educational project designed to promote acceptance and inclusion of all people with Down syndrome. Students helping other students through education and support is the key to breaking barriers between people with disabilities and without.  The Down Syndrome Education Week is one way of accomplishing this. This special week will culminate in a Sunday afternoon celebration known as the Lowcountry Buddy Walk.

The following documents are available to promote inclusion and acceptance of all people with Down syndrome
and to help promote local classrooms’ participation in the 2008 Lowcountry Buddy Walk October 5, 2008 on Daniel Island at Etiwan Park.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
