Down Syndrome Association of the LowCountry - Charleston, SC

I invite you to take a look at this short video – which was filmed by Sports 4 last weekend at the Special Olympics Regatta out of the James Island Yacht Club.

Sam Hazeltine and Wayne Hiott exemplify the type of friendship that forms from training and competing together.

People with intellectual disabilities are often excluded from society because of their differences. Special Olympics South Carolina and the Unified Athlete Program has helped to end social isolation for people with intellectual disabilities by establishing meaningful, lasting one-to-one friendships with their non-disabled peers. These friendships help increase self-esteem, confidence and the abilities of people with and without intellectual disabilities.

We envision a world where people with intellectual disabilities are so successfully integrated into our schools, our workplaces and our general communities.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
