Down Syndrome Association of the LowCountry - Charleston, SC

Letter to Friends of DSAL

Dear Friends of DSAL:

The Down Syndrome Association of the Lowcountry (DSAL) was founded in 1991 by a group of parents, family members and professionals. The primary focus of DSAL over the past decade has been to be a support group for new parents of children with Down syndrome in the form of information-sharing and by offering social and recreational activities throughout the year to persons with Down syndrome and their families. DSAL is also active in sponsoring community-based events and programs aimed at improving the quality of life of children and adults with Down syndrome.

We would like to continue to provide education and information for parents of newborn children with Down syndrome through our newsletter and new parent program. The materials that are included in the new parent packets need to be purchased from various publishers and organizations.

We would like to continue providing medical professionals with input from families and friends to assist them with better care and understanding of our children.

We would like to continue sponsoring recreational outings, special educational events and social events such as:

  • Fall and spring middle- and high-school teen dances
  • Fall Picnic
  • Easter Egg Hunt
  • Spring Picnic
  • Summer pool party
  • Winter holiday gathering

In addition, there are many other projects and fund-raising activities that positively affect our children, family and friends with Down syndrome. In the past, many babies with Down syndrome have been born in the Lowcountry and surrounding areas, and we would like to help new parents of babies and toddlers get some playgroups started.

Our membership contributions are at an all-time low and we need your help! Without an immediate increase in donations, we will not be able to sponsor the above activities and programs.

DSAL is run by a small group of dedicated volunteers. Your membership dollars go a long way in this organization. Please show your commitment by renewing your membership or making a donation to DSAL. The Membership Application is available online by clicking here.

Thanks for helping us help you and yours!

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
