  • The NDSC has joined other national disability organizations urging Senators NOT to support S. 3521, the "Stop Over-Spending Act of 2006 (SOS)." This bill, introduced by Senator Judd Gregg (R.NH), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee could have negative implications for programs serving people with disabilities in the following ways:
  • The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) announced today that thirteen individuals have been awarded scholarships to participate in the Sixth Annual Early Childhood Inclusion Institute in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Each scholarship recipient is the parent of a child with Down syndrome and was nominated by an NDSS Affiliate group to represent the local organization at the Institute and in systems change efforts in their states.

  • A survey of mothers in the March issue of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology found that obstetricians and genetic counselors are falling short when it comes to delivering a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome to pregnant women. Mothers who have children with Down syndrome, diagnosed prenatally, reported that doctors did not tell them about the positive potential of people with Down syndrome nor did they feel like they received enough up-to-date information or contact information for parent support groups.
  • The House of Bounce in Ladson, SC kindly donated an evening of fun to DSAL families. Fun was had by all.

  • The path of an artist, no matter the medium, is often a road less travelled. That was true of dancer Brad Magnus when he performed with country star Michelle Wright at the Sky Dome in Toronto, and for the Emperor of Japan at Expo 2005. But it's just as true now, as he audits dance and drama classes at the University of Victoria.

What is Down Syndrome?

Down syndrome is a chromosome disorder which usually causes a delay in physical, intellectual and language development. The degree to which each individual is affected varies widely. The exact causes of Down syndrome are currently unknown, and although there are prenatal tests that can detect Down syndrome, there is at this time no method for prevention and no cure.
